Hospital Design and Planning

Hospital design and health care facility design can pose a challenge - your space needs to be functional, sterile, and manageable. STERIS supports owners and the architectural and consultant communities through a group of experienced, professional project support personnel.

STERIS Facility Planning/Project Services can help with your requirements for operating room design, hospital expansion and more, and offers owners, architects and the consultant community support in the areas of:

Project Management
Supporting your hospital plan and design goals

STERIS Project Managers support owners and the architectural and consultant communities worldwide. They are experts in the fields of space planning, techniques, procedures, workflow, productivity, equipment selection, specifications, and coordinating STERIS's participation through the various stages of project development. These skills considerably contribute to the practicality of your hospital design and plan and/or operating room design.

The services provided by STERIS's Systems programs assure projects are functional, practical, and reflective of each project's unique needs.

The Systems Project Manager performs an in-depth study of requirements, on-site with the customer, then coordinates the development of sizing reports, planning drawings, functional specifications, and equipment lists custom-designed to the project. This process assures optimum work flows, equipment mix, and quantities.

Project Management also coordinates the many details associated with submittal approval, site inspection, progress reports, manufacturing cycles, and delivery schedules. Depending on the project, we may be responsible for anything from truck tail-gate delivery through complete installation. But no matter what the circumstances, STERIS will be there supporting the requirement.

Health Care Facility and Hospital Design and Planning

STERIS has a professionally staffed Systems Planning Department to assist owners, architects, and healthcare facility planners in the design of specific hospital departments, proper placement of equipment, and even hospital expansion. This service has been rendered on thousands of projects around the world and has affected more than half of the hospitals in the United States.

Our professionals possess an average of 25 years experience in hospital design and plan, and health care facility planning. Services range from simple equipment placement and single room layouts to entire department design, including operating room design. Drawings can be provided from free-hand sketches to elaborate computer-generated detail plans.

While assisting in health care facility and hospital design and/or hospital expansion, the Systems Planning Department can assist in identifying proper materials handling techniques; determining optimum work flows; recommending space allocations and relationships; integrating patient, staff, and material flows; and determining the equipment mixes best suited to particular functions. Our planning experience is extensive in the following areas:
  • Sterile Processing Departments
  • Surgical Suites
  • Gastrointestinal Environment
  • Freestanding Surgical Facilities
  • Material Management Systems
  • Surgical Instrument Rooms
  • Critical Care
  • Emergency Departments
  • Patient Care Facilities
  • Utility Areas
  • Office Spaces

Each program is customized to the particular interests of the group, their experience level and their objectives. The sessions can be arranged for lunch hours, evenings, mornings, or afternoons. They range in length from one hour to four hours. Subject matter includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following:
